Where is the compassion? A question I ask myself on a daily basis. Compassion towards our fellow human beings and animals - it’s gone. No one feels the suffering of anyone else anymore. It’s rare to find a human being that takes time out of his or her day to think about someone other than number 1. It’s always about ME. MY family. MY significant other. MY job. MY car. MY clothes. MY iPod. MY netflix. MY shoes. MY bills. Understood. It IS necessary to think about all of the above…however, should we not devote some time to think about those around us that cannot take time out of their day to think about themselves? What about those who cannot even afford to think about themselves, because they are an 8 year old child taking care of their 3 year old brother, because their mother passed away of AIDS and they have no idea who their father is? What about those that do not want to think about themselves because they are a 16 year old girl who has been pimped out far too many times to care? These scenarios are so common it’s impossible to NOT think about them and those that are suffering because of the thoughtless actions of others.
On a deeper level, the fulfillment that comes from spending part of my day thinking about anyone but number 1 is intoxicating. How can we help? How can we make aware? How can we make the most of our contributions? How can we change, and act towards a positive reform?
Buddha says: "Have compassion for all beings, rich and poor alike; each has their suffering. Some suffer too much, others too little.”
From this compassion, comes action.
I’d like to thank the youth and YTGA for giving me the opportunity to contribute to their group. Being a 100% youth run organization (where youth in this day and age focus on video games and being like Lil Wayne), it is phenomenal to see the time they take out of their day to focus on making a change, a difference, a moment of awareness that spreads out to the public.
It is empowering. I strongly believe that every goal, every action, every thought, every expression, should be an attempt to empower from within – once you empower within, you can then empower out.
